        5. Egyptian diplomat and politician Mervat Tallawy is the first woman to receive the Alumni Association’s lifetime achievement award. Ambassador Tallawy served as Deputy Director of the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (now known as UN Women) from 1985 to 1988.

          As head of the Egyptian delegation to the 56th session of the Commission on the Status of Women in 2012, she dedicated herself to preventing rollbacks on hard-fought gains such as the international recognition of women’s reproductive and sexual health rights. 

          She surprised delegates from more than 130 countries when she ignored the Egypt Muslim Brotherhood and announced that Egypt would join a consensus on a document setting global standards for action to prevent and end violence against women.
